A little bit about me

Hi! My BA is in Pure Mathematics and I also have a MS in Analytics in Knowledge Management. My 2 favorite things are math and working with kids. Between being a nanny, camp counselor, tutor, driver, coach, Big Sister, Director of two Math Learning Centers -- I have over 15 yrs of childcare experience.

12 yrs ago I started caring for infants and FELL IN LOVE -- the families I worked for were a dream and we made an incredible team. I adore working with kids because it is purposeful work. It exercises my mind, body, and soul, and toddlers tell great jokes.

My method of child care pulls from Dr. Montessori. I am all about independent play, being the boss of our own bodies, and being curious and kind towards our feelings.

A little about me - I love playing tennis, doing yoga, walking through the woods, hanging with my doggo, cooking yummy food, and going with the flow! My goal is to start Miss Abby's Childcare Center that is a combo Forest and Montessori School. Specializing in PLAY.

Annie
"We hired Abby when my son was 4 months old for day time, evening, and occasional overnight help. She was up to date with infant care knowledge (CPR, basic first aid, feeding/sleeping schedules, sleep training techniques, and safe transportation). She is collaborative, flexible, dependable, punctual, and confident. As first-time parents, there was so much to learn, so having Abby along for the ride was invaluable. As my son started walking and talking she sought out activities to enrich him, and was so responsible about his needs, we never had to worry. Sometimes I would hear Abby talking to my son in depth about something, and many times over I though how special it was to have a care giver who treats your child the way you would. It allowed my husband and I to enjoy time together without the guilt of leaving our son with “the babysitter”. She is well-educated, conscientious, and enthusiastic. We can’t recommend her highly enough!"

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

as instructor turned Director of Operations at Mathnasium of Roland park -- taught and developed mathematical learning plans customized to each individual's math needs; 2nd grade - Calc 2.

as Director of Mathnasium of Severna Park -- directly worked with 200+ kids and their families to tackle individual math anxieties through personalized learning plans; outside of the Center I organized "Math Nights" for local Elm/Middle schools -- where the point of doing math is to have fun with your family! Kindergarten - Calc 2.

as a YMCA camp counselor (tennis camp) for 4 summers; kids ages 5-15yrs.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

(dependent on age of kiddo) coloring, doing puzzles, building legos, reading to each other, making up silly dances/routines, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, biking, blowing bubbles, playing in the pool, taking a walk and pretending to be on a safari, dancing, playing dress up, counting anything and everything, making animal noises, saying hi to dogs, building forts and knocking them down, learning something new!!!!

The most important part about being a nanny...

is first and foremost being an advocate for the child -- I want my kiddos to know they are safe with me, can tell me anything, and know I am always looking out for them.

My experience with special needs children...

during my time with Mathnasium (both locations), about a quarter of my kids had learning disabilities. Math anxiety is crippling even without a learning disability. Teaching kids the proper tools to overcome the anxiety/fear of math statistically lowers their predisposition to Depression and Anxiety.

The most important part about being a nanny...

wow...truly too many moments that they blur into one really lovely and warm feeling. One of the most recent was a few months ago when one of my past nanny mom's asked me to babysit for a few random days -- the last time I had seen G, he was about 10 months and now he was 2! Just starting to string together babble into sentences. The last days I was with him, we clicked so well. We had a blast looking for worms and throwing rocks in the water. Later that night nanny mom mentioned she noticed I'm the only other person G holds a conversation with and it made me feel over the moon. I had been with him since he was 3 months and knew we were close but it was really nice to know that he feels that way too :)
