Imagine Mary Poppins but she enjoys Dungeons and Dragons in her free time. In studying some early childhood development in college, I believe in the importance of play and imagination but recognize these can be perfect areas to learn about life with such fantastical bumpers. Most of my adult childcare experience has come from volunteering with a daycare for children who had experienced severe trauma in Sarasota during college or helping/leading the childcare effort for the Migrant Worker Coalition as they held their meetings pre-Covid. Though I spent years at each, it has clearly been some time and, to be clear, I want to renew my first aid and cpr certifications prior to actually taking any jobs. So silly voices abound, prepared for a dramatic reading of any bedtime story.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

It varies from child to child. I know that seems a cop out but children aren’t a monolith. I enjoy doing whatever they love but also trying new things, exploring a well rounded life. It does not matter if they liked it, it matters that they tried their best—ideally.

My experience with special needs children...

I’ve worked with children who experience various forms of neurodivergence and levels of care for it. I myself am not neurotypical and find that aids in some cases with the child feeling understood, that those feelings matter and are not to be dismissed. In others it fosters a feeling of being safe to communicate in their preferred fashion without judgment. I do not, however, have as much experience with physical disability but would be more than willing to educate myself on every aspect.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Watching and ever so subtly guiding a child through reading their first word will absolutely never get less thrilling because that confidence breeds excitement for each word after that. And just like that, these itty bitty pieces of this centuries old puzzle begin snapping into place, ready to blossom.
