I love getting to know the children; know what they're into, what excites them, and what kind of music they like. Once I know, I plan activities from there (after a run-through with the parents)!

For me, it's their safety, maintaining a great relationship with them, and supporting them in anyway they need!
My experience with special needs children...
As I mentioned, I work at the Perkins School for the Deaf and Blind. I also have Deaf parents, so I grew up with families with children of various diagnosis, such as, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, etc. I babysat some of their kids as I got older, and had so much fun!
The most important part about being a nanny...
Was when a kid was having a rough day; their emotions were extremely big that day. I asked them what was wrong, they refused to tell me. Instead of constantly asking them what was wrong, I figured we could do some arts and crafts. I've read art therapy can be extremely helpful for expressing whatever emotions are too big for us. After some time went by doing some arts and crafts, they eventually opened up! I'm glad they felt comfortable enough to even say anything to me in the first place. We had a discussion with their parents, and came up with some solutions!
