A child who was a native Romanian speaker would always tell me "I love you Peppa Pig" at lunchtime. This went on for weeks. He then changed the sentiment to "I love you Mickey Mouse". Again, that went on for weeks. One day, he looked up and said "I love you Ms. Alison". I feel this happened because I was the only teacher to attempt to learn some simple phrases in Romanian (hello, bathroom, please and thank you, etc.) I know this bridged a gap for him, and made him become more comfortable in his new environment.
