My experience with special needs children...
I grew up living with my special needs aunt. Although she was 30 years older than me she was very much a child at heart. After high school I spent some time as her caretaker. This role consisted of playing with dolls & puzzles, meal preparation, bathing, and doctor’s appointments.
She was non-verbal so I am very comfortable and intuitive when it comes to cases like this.
