A little bit about me

I'm an elementary school teacher turned nanny, who loves arts & crafts, reading, and being outdoors! I have teaching experience, and am certified in Elementary Education and TESOL.

I'm currently finishing a 3 year position as a nanny/household manager with 3 elementary students, and have worked with at least 10 families long term. In this time, I've taught kids how to swim and ride bikes, paint and knit, and even publish their own books!

As my charges age, I've taught cursive and multiplication, helped with homework and book reports, and guided them towards a sense of independence and responsibility inside and outside of their homes. (Putting their laundry away is still a work in progress!)

I'm able to problem solve and think on my feet, all while packing lunches and finding missing shoes! I'm comfortable with all ages, pets, tutoring, household help, and meal prep (including dietary restrictions).

My nanny superpower is hiding veggies and getting kids to eat healthy, tasty meals!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

In the last 15 years I have worked as a camp counselor, with primary supervision of 7th and 8th grade girls. I also taught campers of all ages during arts & crafts and photography classes.

I spent three years teaching elementary school, running my own first and third grade classrooms, and also volunteered with after school reading clubs.

As a nanny for the last 12 years, I've hosted many play dates and birthday parties, provided childcare for church groups, and helped several families throughout the pandemic.

I also spent three years volunteering with a high school ESOL program, where I assisted in the classroom and work with teenage English Language Learners.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I am a crafty nanny! I love introducing new art projects to my charges! In the past, we've enjoyed painting kindness rocks and making everlasting bubbles. I have also taught most of my charges how to knit and crochet, at their request, and have helped make countless dresses and blankets for Barbies and American Girl dolls! Tie dyed shirts were also a favorite of my older charges!

I also enjoy being active, and taking my charges outside for scavenger hunts and relay races. I've spent many hours at the pool, teaching my charges to swim and helping them pass swim tests.

In the past, I've taken several self-defense classes, and enjoyed supporting one of my charges who developed an interest in karate. I also dabble in basketball and tennis, and love learning alongside my charges.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was drawn to nannying because of the one-on-one interactions it provides. As a classroom teacher, I became very familiar with the many needs of my students, and was only able to meet their academic needs. I knew that I wanted to do more. I enjoy being able to care for my charges and help them become more independent, self-sufficient, and well-rounded in a way that I couldn't in the classroom.

Because of my classroom experience, I also enjoy being able to advocate for my charges and help them and their families navigate the educational world and provide additional support at home.

Ultimately, I am a nanny so I can have a positive impact on the whole child, and serve as a mentor and role model.

My experience with special needs children...

During my teaching programs, I have taken several special education classes, and have worked with students who learn differently. Primarily, I have worked with students with ADHD, ADD, and dyslexia.

I am always looking to add to my professional development portfolio and am looking to take courses related to other special needs.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have had so many perfect nanny moments!

My favorite moments are when my charges specifically ask for me and show me that they love me. After working with one family for several weeks, both children (who had been very sweet, but shy and reserved) gave me a hug goodbye. The older girl had always been excited to see me, but this was the firs time she'd really shown how much she enjoyed our time together. Her face lit up when I hugged her back and told her I'd see her the next week. It brought me to tears in my car to realize that I'd bonded with her and that she felt comfortable with me. That same child now regularly asks for me, and likes to tell people all of the things I've taught her. Everyone in her family knows that Miss Amanda taught her to knit!
