My experience with special needs children...
I have often cared for children with varied special needs throughout my lifetime, beginning during the summers of my high school years when I volunteered at a school for children who were severely affected by autism. It became my lifelong passion to care for those who needed a little extra compassionate loving care. I’m currently employed part-time with an agency who provides care for children and adults with a variety of special needs. My main client for the last three years is a 10-year-old girl in a wheelchair, with a complicated genetic abnormality which shares characteristics with those who are on the autism spectrum and with cerebral palsy. Although she is mostly nonverbal, we hit it off perfectly from the moment we met, and are able to communicate wonderfully with each other. It’s been my pleasure to spend these last 3+ years with her. I’ve also worked with younger autistic kids who I’ve accompanied each day to summer camp, as their personal one on one advocate, etc.
