It’s not just about taking care of the children, it’s about helping those families who need the extra support for their busy lives. And taking care of one another is what makes the world go around.
My experience with special needs children...
My main experience with children who have special needs is from school growing up. When I was done with my work in classes, I would help the teachers with other kids who have Autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other medical history. I did this up until I was 16 when I graduated from high school. So I wasn’t really a nanny, but I do enjoy helping where I can.
The most important part about being a nanny...
There was this one time. A little over a year old, let’s call him Parker (for privacy reasons). He was taking a nap, and I was drifting off myself. We had a very exciting day of him dancing and singing around the living room. And I had almost fallen asleep when I hear a little “nela?” I had never been so awake after that. When his parents got home, it’s all he would say. And it didn’t set in that his first word was my name until his mother had told me. It did kind of make me nervous, cos you would figure the first word would be “mama” or “dada” so I thought they were a little upset. But his parents were over the moon for it. It’s moments where you don’t expect to be involved in big steps of children’s lives, but you end up still making a difference for them even in the small ones that resonate with me.
