A little bit about me

Aloha! My name is Angel, and although I have not worked as a nanny for pay in the past, I have cared for my 7 nephews and nieces, as well as many of the keiki who live in my neighborhood in Ahuimanu. My educational background was in literature, with an emphasis in education at the high school level. I was a substitute teacher in Oklahoma City for years prior to moving to Hawaii. In Hawaii I have worked in nonprofits, as a fundraiser, grant writer, and database administrator. But I have had the opportunity to directly support children and youth in my career, at the Institute for Human Services and at Liliuokalani Trust. I work very well with keiki between the ages of 5-16 years of age. I have study/training in child development, and creating engaging activities to meet age and developmental needs, and I enjoy interactive play. I am also capable in tutoring in language arts, history, and science. I have child CPR/First Aid, though my certs expired recently. Willing to renew.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I supported childcare programs during my employment with Liliuokalani Trust on many different occasions. I worked with a daycare program for clients attending nursing school, those Keiki were generally between 2-8 years of age. I supported programs that served youth between about 11-14 years of age located in transitional shelters who had been removed from other locations by Child Protective Services. I provided GED tutoring to youth who had left high school early and wanted to obtain their equivalency. I assisted with toddlers so that single parents could run errands or meet with social workers. And I have cared for or looked after countless keiki living in my neighborhood as a kind of "community Aunty."

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I like to let children lead activities when possible and encourage them to express what they are interested in doing. But I try to come up with creative and educational options that are either new to the child, or add something new to an ordinary playtime activity. That could involve a nature exploration at local park or in the neighborhood, or creative craft projects. Swimming, water balloons, or other water play is fun for hot days. I love playing games, including kid friendly charades, or outdoor games like bean bag toss. I especially enjoy reading with children, or asking them to read to me. I also enjoy listening to all types of music and engaging in dancing and singing. I am always happy to engage in toy playtime with cars, dolls, stuffed animals, and other similar toys. I'm very interactive, but also happy to watch kids while they play on their own or with their friends.

My experience with special needs children...

I do not have extensive experience with special needs children. I have extensive experience with children with ADHD/ADD and some experience with OCD. I do have experience with children with severer anxiety issues and panic disorders. I have minimal experience with children on the autism spectrum, I am capable of managing but I would not consider myself well-skilled in that area. Other special needs I have very little experience with and would not be comfortable managing without extremely through instructions from the parents.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Although I have not formally worked as a nanny, I have had many rewarding moments with my nieces and nephews, as well as the children of friends and neighbors I have looked after.
