I had one student who was hardly using any vocabulary, he/she didn't initiate conversation, and rarely paid attention when you tried to talk to them. I'll never forget one day, two months into the school year, the student came up to me and signed "chase your turn" (we were playing tag). It was the first time he/she initiated conversation with me and correctly used words to communicate what she wanted.
