I started babysitting for kids in my neighborhood when I was 12, and every job I’ve had since that time has been in childcare- from after school programs to summer camps, on call babysitting, and an infant/toddler teacher in a daycare setting. Through these jobs I’ve worked with newborns through eight graders!
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Outdoor activities are definitely my favorite, in all weather! The kids I’ve nannied for have spent countless mornings in full snow or rain gear at an empty playgrounds. I love going on bike rides, hikes, or just sending them out into a muddy part of the yard with old kitchen utensils. If the weather is mostly cooperating I like to spend as much time outside as possible!
Very rarely do I set up an indoor activity or project. I once heard that “play is the work of childhood” and I take that very seriously! Being able to play and entertain themselves independently is a very important skill, and I believe is the best thing for a child’s mental health. I am very happy to make sure children have age appropriate toys and materials, but you are not likely to find me setting up an activity or game.
