During high school, I worked as a leader-in-training at my childhood summer camp. After graduating from college, I moved to Maine from Texas and began working as a child protective caseworker for the Department of Health and Human Services. I also have some experience as a children's case manager at the Morrison Center, and have babysat for family and friends.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I'm a big believer in fun learning, so I enjoy doing things that couple creativity with motor skills like crafts, coloring, and playing with sidewalk chalk. I also like to read with children and having outdoor playtime if the weather allows for it.
The most important part about being a nanny...
It's important to me that the children I'm with are (and feel) completely safe, and don't have access to information or topics that aren't appropriate for their age group. Aside from the obvious, I think it's crucial to follow the parents' instructions for schedules and redirecting behavior as to not confuse the child or overstep my role. Lastly, I think it is important to build good rapport and mutual respect with the child I am working with so that our time together is productive, fun, and courteous all around.
My experience with special needs children...
I have some experience working with children with special needs - primarily autism, ADHD, and other learning delays. I also have experience working with children who have behavioral issues, however my experience with these children is more so finding beneficial resources and connections rather than hands-on care.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I was able to compromise with a toddler! I had to prepare lunch and she wanted to play outside in her sandbox, so I gave her half a pomegranate and told her I needed her help getting the seeds out. She stood next to me at the counter and picked out the seeds while I watched her and made sandwiches. Meltdown avoided, crisis averted.
