The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favourite nanny moments was when the youngest boy I cared for, G (age 5), suddenly realized he could “read-read.” We were at our usual café, and before I could read out the chalkboard menu to him, he said he couldn’t decide between the blueberry muffin or the strawberry banana smoothie. He was reading the words aloud completely on his own. We both froze, smiling at each other, and I said, “Did you just read that?” He grinned and said, “Yeah! I even read the other stuff in my head too!” I laughed and said, “Oh my goodness, G… you can like read-read now! When did that happen?” He thought for a second and said, “I think just now! See, watch,” and started reading out the rest of the menu. Then he added, “I just started hearing the words in my head—it’s kinda weird!” I asked him if he was so proud, and gave him the biggest hug, and he said, “Yeah, I’m pretty proud of me,” still hugging me. It was so special to see the moment when everything "clicked" for him. I’ll never forget it.
