From my experience with adults as well as children with disabilities it has become vitally important to me that I appreciate humanity at all stages of life. I always say “thank you” for a child’s efforts in paying attention, listening, sharing, or comforting. I like to say “Thanks for hanging out with/spending time with me!” followed by something I genuinely enjoyed about our day when it is time for me to leave. I communicate affection and gratitude according to the child’s communication skills. It is important to me that children and disabled adults are not made to feel like projects or burdens.
