My experience with special needs children...
I have worked with a few autistic children and they did start to communicate through sign language and small first words. I also worked with a child who had a stroke in the womb which caused him have cerebral palsy. Before he left my care he was climbing steps without my help. Down syndrome children are so fun to interact and learn with and when any child communicates with you when they couldn't is always exciting.
