More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have been a camp counselor for the past 6 years. Head of the junior high department for 3 years. Head of the extended day program ages 4-15. I’ve been a babysitter since I was 13 and worked as a part time nanny since I was 18. When my sister in law was in nursing school, working crazy hours, I helped out and took care of my nephew who was an infant at the time. I spent the [phone number hidden] academic year as an in personal tutor/ zoom teacher for a 1st and 2nd grader and as a nanny for a 2 year old.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Reading, going for walks, cooking lessons, gardening, board games etc. For the little ones I try to find a lot of hands on activities to help train motor skills and cognitive function. For example, we will play with fake fruits and vegetables and then later plant our own garden. Or it’s as simple as creating a song we sing for washing our hands. As a camp counselor my list of crafts and sports games is endless. For the older kids, I have more complex crafts and tons of active games. For those who like reading, I’d love to have our own book club. Whether that be having our own sit down discussion about the book or we write our thoughts in a shared journal.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I love the stories that come out of the job but it’s just a bonus. I want to leave an impact on the world. Helping shape the future into bright, emotionally intelligent beings is my way of doing just that. Kids always teach us something about ourselves even when we least expect it. It’s a hard job but its fulfilling.

My experience with special needs children...

I’ve worked with kids on the spectrum, kids who struggle with mental health, and kids in the foster care system. Respecting boundaries is most important to me. I want the kids I work with to feel safe and comfortable to tell me what they need. Sometimes safe and comfortable means lashing out at me and that’s totally okay. I typically offer a 5-10min cool down, depending on age, and after, work out together why they felt the need to act out. I have other methods of co-regulation depending on the child but most times the cool down method allows for both of us to recenter. As a child who was extremely reactive and emotional I understand what it’s like to have these big feelings and not know what to do about it.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Oh my goodness. It has to be when I working for a family with three little girls. At the time the youngest was down for a nap and the oldest and the middle sibling were sitting at their zoom stations right next to each other. I was helping the eldest (~seven) with her work. Just as she was finishing up her last problem, I hear a large pop and a little voice shout “EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!” I looked over at her sister (~6) who had a habit of chewing on things, to find that she had bitten down on a glue bottle that didn’t have the cap screwed on all the way. It had burst open and sprayed glue all over her and their dog. When I reminded her that we don’t put things in our mouth that don’t belong she looked me dead in the eyes and said “are you SURE I was chewing on the bottle, we aren’t positive, you didn’t see” It was practically impossible to keep a straight face. After that all school supplies were kept with me and only used if they asked permission.
