A little bit about me

Hello, my name is Cameron, and I have worked with children in some capacity for the entirety of my career, about ten years. In 2018 I graduated summa cum laude from NIU with a degree in early childhood education. I worked in a daycare in college for nearly four years, then as a teaching assistant in a preschool, briefly as a kindergarten teacher, and most recently as a nanny, which I've been doing for the last four years.

Most of my experience is with 2 and 3-year-olds, but I've also worked extensively with infants and preschoolers, as well as some experience with young grade schoolers. My motto for working with children is "gentle but firm", meaning I will enforce boundaries, but in a way that acknowledges the child's feelings and explains the reasons for the boundary.

I tend to go out with the kids most days, whether it's just a walk around the block, the library, a children's museum, or a playground. In the home, I tend to gravitate towards reading, arts and crafts, and sensory activities, depending on the interests of the children.

My top priority is always the safety of the children in my care. This includes not only physical safety but their emotional well-being. I want the kids to know that they can come to me for comfort, support, and guidance.

One day a three-year-old in my care was very worried because the neighbor had told him that there were monsters nearby coming to get him. I held him and told him that monsters aren't real, but even if they were, I would fight them off and they wouldn't be able to get him. The look of relief as he hugged me is something I think about a lot.
