More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
Grew up in musical theatre and became a mentor or the shows (age-wise) I could no longer be in. I've worked with kids basically my whole life and all through high school I was in a volunteer cosplay group that attended charity events, movie premieres and more! I've worked with kids who have special needs through high school, theatre and Autism Awareness walks with my volunteer cosplay group!
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Indoors, I love to play music and just have fun with the kids doing whatever they'd like to do, whether that be watching movies, drawing, or playing imagination. As for outdoor activities--I love going to parks (that are safe for children), playing games in the backyard even just eating lunch in the backyard for some fresh air!
The most important part about being a nanny...
Ensuring the kids are having a good time. We of course need to make sure we keep true to our word with rules set in place, but if someone is the type of nanny who isn't going to allow them any fun whatsoever--They are not a person the kids are going to respect. Respect and love is given out of care, not fear.
My experience with special needs children...
I spent 4 years being a buddy to a special needs child in musical theatre. I was 11 when I met him, nobody really knew how to calm him when he got overstimulated or engage with him so I became his friend. When the lights and noise became too much, I took him to the back room, we laid on the floor and talked about transformers or legos. For all of high school I was in a volunteer group of cosplayers (people who dressed up as characters and pretended to be them for kids) and we attended several Autism Awareness Walks. Then, my junior and senior year of high school I took a "PAL" class (working with the high schoolers with special needs). I worked with a range of people on the spectrum, from nonverbal to audible tics. We had some who had anger control issues and we had some who had sensory issues. I know the basics of ASL from learning bits and pieces of it growing up and from that class where I learned certain words/responses for one of our nonverbal high schoolers.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite babysitting moment was when I was 14, babysitting my 5 younger cousins (ages 2-9). They asked for Mac and cheese for lunch, so of course I made it, but the only problem was that when I went to put the Mac and cheese into their bowls--There was no cheese on them, and I have no clue where it went. It just disappeared and I was starting to get worried cause they were all excited so I found the next best solution. Instead of just making a new box like a normal person, I grabbed butter and made buttered noodles for them. They tried them and I had to make a whole new box again of specifically buttered noodles instead of Mac and cheese because they love it so much. My aunt texted me weeks later asking what buttered noodles were, because they won't stop asking her to make them.
