More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I've volunteered at my church's children ministry for ages 2-6 for a year. I also have a 3 year old sister that I cared for since she was born as my mom got cancer shortly after her birth. Finally, I also cared for my other sister who was 10 at the time and was tasked with picking her up from school, finding something for her to eat, whether I had to cook or order take out, all the while making sure my baby sister was well fed, changed, and bathed.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love taking them to parks and libraries! My fondest moment of my childhood is going to the library with my father and getting so excited to pick a book and read a page to him! I also love going to zoo's or aquariums or any type of activities so they can go out and build on the communication aspect of life that you wont get at home strapped to the TV.
My experience with special needs children...
I used to babysit my aunts child who had autism and was around 6 at the time. He was mostly non verbal and liked to move around a lot. It was challenging because he couldn't communicate his needs and sometimes it felt like I was speaking a foreign language to him. After some patience and picking up on his cues throughout multiple sessions and talks with his mother, we developed a great relationship with each other and we were able to have a lot of fun! One day before he left he went to hug me without anyone asking him to, and he very much hated any sort of affection, but that my heart melt and made my day truthfully. He is an amazing boy!
The most important part about being a nanny...
One of my favorite moments was at my churches ministry. There was this super quiet girl who kept to herself. The kids and teachers would try to talk to her but she wouldn't respond or just slightly nod. I saw myself in her as I was a quiet kid and stayed with her for a good majority of the day as all the other kids were attended for. She would follow me and always sit next to me during our circle huddle. Then, before she went home she gave me a little smile on her way out.
I saw her again the next week and I actively saw her opening up to me more and more as time progressed. She was smiling, she spoke to me, it was very quiet but more than previously, and she also became my shadow which I thought was cute. I slowly introduced her to some of the other kids to help her out a little and she instantly lit up and was having so much fun with the other kids! Before she left, she gave me the biggest hug and always waved at me if she didn't have my class the following weeks!
