A little bit about me

I’m Grandmotherly. My favorite child raising book is ‘It’s OK NOT to Share’. I believe in helping children learn conflict resolution, not punishing by using time outs. I birthed & raised 3 daughters. The are all adults now. One is a Hospice social worker. One is an artist and the youngest is a workshop facilitator. They all like me now and thank me for helping them grow into who they are today. My favorite child raising book is 'It's OK Not to Share'. The concept is to allow children to learn to be compassion, caring people, plus learn conflict resolution. I don't get in the middle of children's conflicts. I have them sit down and talk it through. While they are doing this, I have left the room. It encourages peaceful conflict resolution and prevents blaming each other or trying to get me to decide who is right or wrong. It minimizes sibling rivalry.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

From the time my children entered school, I served as a volunteer. Most of the time I tutored one on one with children who were having difficulties with math or reading.
In my much younger years, I babysat for neighbors' children. I was a Camp Fire Girl and as a Junior Camp Councilor, I organized the children in various activities.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love visiting the library with children and attending the children oriented book readings. I love reading to children or for readers, listening to them read. For preschoolers, I like choosing books with outstanding illustrations. I love using voices for the various characters.

Outside it is the playground. Or walking through the "woods" at Whetstone.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Raising the child/ren, not managing them. Even if it is only 3-4 hours, I am their in loco parentis. To me, that means I am charged with helping build good character.

My experience with special needs children...

My next door neighbors' son is a 41 year old developmentally delayed person. We have been neighbors since before he was born. Including my neighbors on the other side, we had 8 children. When they were young they played together. As he grew older, he would often clear snow off my windshield before I left for work. He still likes being helpful and I hire him to do help me out. I always pay him, as he had no other income. Sometimes when I am sitting on my front porch, he comes over and "hangs out" with me.

The most important part about being a nanny...

There are so many! Children delight me. However, this one happened two nights ago when I was child tending two children that I often babysit. The four year old just could not settle down. I tried visualization. Tensing and relaxing body parts, to no avail. Finally, after I had gone back into the living room, I called to her to come sit with me. We just sat and chatted. I asked her about preschool and going to the playground and the challenges since she had not been outside due to her brother's illness. Finally I asked her if she thought she would be ready to go to bed in 2 minutes. She agreed, but has no idea what that is, so I said, " I said when you think 2 minutes are up, tell me. She did and I asked her if she was ready to go to sleep. She said she was, went back to bed and fell asleep.

Tiara H. - Seeking Work in Columbus

Part-Time Child Care Provider Available in Columbus, OH: Tiara H.

I'm Tiara, a college student studying at The Ohio State University. I've babysat frequently throughout the years but have 6+ years of professional experience. Previously, I served as an afterschool teacher in the Grandview Heights district, but for the last two years I've been working as a nanny for a family of three—a nine, five and a half, and 2-year-old. This included providing learning activities for the five-year-old in preparation for kindergarten, engaging the 2-year-old in age-appropriate development, carpooling, and housework. My experience in summer camps left me with a ton of ideas to keep children entertained and occupied without the use of electronics! Woo-hoo!

My certifications are: First Aid, CPR, Child Abuse, Food Allergies, Early Childhood Lesson Planning & Communicable Diseases. I also have experience with Autism, ADHD, and developmental delays.
