My experience with special needs children...
When my oldest son was in elementary school he had ADD. He struggled in his schoolwork, and he repeated the first grade.
But he seemed to find middle school less difficult.
My wife and I had quite a problem but we succeeded in helping the boy. By the time he was in high school he appeared to have overcome this weakness.
