A little bit about me

My name is Elena Dasilva, and I am a 20-year-old third-year student at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, with a double minor in Women's and Gender Studies and Religious Studies. I have been babysitting and part-time nannying for children of all ages since I was 13 years old. Throughout my high school years, I worked at Children's Center of Damascus part-time during the school year, and full-time during summer break. There, I gained more experience in caring for children aged two-months to 10-years old, as well as experience lesson planning and teaching. Since being a college student, I have received Basic Life Support Training, as well as been certified as a Nurse Aide I. Throughout my training, I gained experience working on the opposite side of the age spectrum, with elderly individuals who needed assistance with daily tasks, or needed more extensive assistance due to dementia or other health issues.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

In addition to babysitting, part-time nannying, and working at Children's Center of Damascus, I have plenty of other experiences working with and caring for children. When I was a younger teenager, I cared for children aged infant to 7-years old, while their parents took English classes after school. This opportunity granted me experience working with children that weren't fluent in English, which became a valuable skill. In high school, I was a member of the Child Development program, in which we spent the first half of the school year learning about the development, safety, and needs of children, and would plan and deliver lessons for the second half. I was a member of this program for three years.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Going on walks, arts and crafts, playing with our imagination, going to the park, and doing other hands-on activities.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part of being a nanny for me is to make a positive impact on the children and family by providing a safe and fun environment for the kids, and be a trustworthy source.

My experience with special needs children...

One of my class periods in high school was assisting the special education students with their gym class. I also have a few family members/family friends that are on the autism spectrum. I have been interacting with these individuals for years. Communicating with them, interacting with them, and understanding them as always come naturally and felt comfortable to me.
