To me the most important thing is trust. Choosing a nanny for your child is one of the most important things you will do. This person will be there with your child while you are not. They will become part of your family. You have to fully be able to trust them that they are the absolute best person.
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked with special needs children and adults over the years. This including children on the spectrum (verbal and non). Ones with developmental disabilities and physical disabilities. I’ve done everything from teaching them how to communicate the best way they can, to using the restroom, even dressing like putting on shoes and coat. People with special needs are just like us. They just take time to learn a bit differently. It takes patience and practice but at the end of the day they are some of the sweets people I have ever met.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Once while coloring with a young boy he looked at me right in the eye and said “why are you so angry Miss Gina?” I said, “I’m not I’m just coloring. “ he then pointed at my face and his face then mine again and said “well your eyebrows say differently.”
I also had one of my almost non verbal autistic boys come up to me while we were playing on the floor. Look at me. Put his hand on each of my cheeks and say “pretty.”
Not only did this bring me to tears, it also made me laugh. Because it was probably the first time I ever had a full face of makeup up on at work haha.
