A little bit about me

My name is Heather. I'm currently on summer vacation as I work as a school counselor. Prior to this year I have worked as a special education teacher with students that have emotional and behavioral difficulties. Many moons ago, I worked as a live-in nanny over the summer months for a family that traveled to their home in Maine for the summer.
I love being outside, I'm creative, dependable and flexible. In my new position as a school counselor I have focused on play therapy and have many games, toys, crafts, physical movement activities to do with your child.
I am available and happy to help with light housekeeping duties, run errands or prep or make meals. I look forward to speaking with you to see if I am a good match for your child/children and your family's needs.

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have been a special education teacher working with children with a range of abilities and challenges for the past 23 years.

Long before I became a teacher, I babysat and was a summer live-in nanny for a family from the Washington DC area in downeast Maine.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Arts and crafts, biking, yoga, swimming, paddle boarding, seashell hunting, hiking. I love reading, coloring, building with legos and playing games.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I'm a relationship person. I think the relationship with the child is highly important, however, it's the whole family. I want to be seen as helpful, an addition and support to the family and children's lives.

My experience with special needs children...

I have worked with children with a large range of needs. My experiences as a special educator mostly focused on students with emotional and behavioral challenges, Autism, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, children with Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders, epilepsy, and honestly there are many more.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The second day of my long-term nanny position the girls (ages 1, 3, and 5 years old) began creating sea animals and ocean scenes with recycled materials, found items, etc. and taped them around the windows of their play room. Those decorations lived in their summer home for 10 years, out lasting our time together and into their teens.
