My experience with special needs children...
I have cared for special needs children age 9 to 15 yrs old. I worked at Mary Cariola. I worked with children with mobility and language issues. I have experience with immobile students (I call them my monster truck drivers), incontinence, hearing and speech disabilities, developmental disabilities. I did feeding, changing soiled clothes, helping some with walking and gym activities, learning to read, write, communicate using sensory toys and photos or other objects of interest. Keeps them sharp, playful, capable. The most joy I got out of it was when the non verbal students give me faces, smiles, or frowns or even hand gestures and the side eye. It is hilarious. These kids are full of character, attitude and comical. This is the most rewarding job I ever had.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I was babysitting my cousin who was 3 years old and he was reading or more like reciting a book we had been practicing reading daily and he was imitating me and how I read the story to him and also quizzing me on it. It was so great to see him interested in the book and able to comprehend and retell the story so well. It help me realize how important it is to have patience and teach a child in fun ways so that they can retain it and enjoy learning more. It was so funny how he imitated me too, of course he added his own attitude and personality to it. Too funny. Touching nanny moment for sure.

While I do believe structure and consistency help children thrive, I do also have a more laidback approach to childcare. In my experience, an environment that is too strict becomes stressful for not just the children, but also the parents and myself. Adults are present in a child’s life to teach and guide, but that doesn’t mean we can’t also let a child follow their natural instincts. Children are people too!
I am willing to plan activities and crafts, go on occasional outings, prepare meals, and do some basic cleaning and pet care. I was CPR certified in the past but that has since expired. I am willing to renew it if necessary.
