The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important part about being a nanny for me is not only to help provide a safe environment for the child, but also to meet their needs. For me these include but are not limited to talking and listening to a child, allowing them to be heard, providing appropriate but pleasurable activities for the child, and modeling positive behavior.
My experience with special needs children...
- In my first year of summer camp experience I worked with a student who was non-verbal and had autism. My responsibilities included providing supervision and ensuring a safe play environment, interacting with them through talking and playing, providing things like paper for the student to shred, and to change their clothes/diapers as the student had difficulties using the bathroom and would wear a diaper.
- In my current childcare job I work with a student who has autism who is high functioning. This student interacts and plays with other students/staff. Responsibilities for this student include ensuring a safe play environment, providing snacks brought from home, and redirecting the student if certain behaviors occur such as hitting, screaming, or not following directions.
I also live with my 8-year old sister Elliyah who has autism and is high functioning. Since she was born I have been involved with her through babysitting, transportation from school/daycare, and active play.
