More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I spent 4 years as a summer camp counselor at a sleepaway camp. These were easily the best summers of my life. Creating lasting memories for young campers was something I cherished. Each camper of mine always left camp with a big smile on their face; some even sobbed when their parents would come to pick them up (I'm sure that's partially because I would let them wear princess dresses to bed, but you know, you gotta pick your battles!) After my 3rd year as a counselor, I was awarded for the job I did by the director and board of the camp.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I enjoy doing whatever makes a child happy; each child is different and has different interests. Whether that's something creative, athletic, or studious. I am up for any game or project, as long as the children are engaged.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Aside from keeping the child safe, which is always of the utmost importance, I would say the most important part of being a nanny is being present. It is so imperative to be attentive and interested in what a child is doing or saying. That attentiveness lays the groundwork for mutual respect, which many people overlook when dealing with children. Being present also means understanding the child. Watching how the child reacts to different situations and how their feelings manifest are attributes one should know about a child in their care, and being present and attentive is the only way that can happen.
My experience with special needs children...
I have been in charge of around 4 different children on all different parts of the autism spectrum. What I learned from that is that though they might have all had autism, they all had completely different needs from each other, just like any other kid. Autistic children are special because they see the world differently than a neurotypical person, but that doesn't mean it's less valid. My job as a nanny would be to adapt and learn how to care for the child the way they need to be cared for, which goes for any child, special needs or not.
