More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I was a nursery attendant and nanny in college and of course, I babysat since I was a kidā¦. Additionally, I am a mental health counselorā¦ and worked with young adults. Not exactly ākidsāā¦but, it gave me extensive background in special needs such as autism and ADHD. I learned many tools for how to help people with these disabilitiesā¦and have insight and sensitivity to them.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Crafts! Lots of paints, felt and popsicle sticks! Fun science projects. Reading. Imaginative and open ended play is essential, wherever you are! I love to make props for imaginative play as craft projects.... Forts and water balloon fights (only if mom/dad say itās ok). Playgrounds, swimming (if applicable), walks, play with pets....
The most important part about being a nanny...
Just BEING there. When they need you for anything. Kiddos need us. Giving love. Being a safe place. LISTENING. Paying attentionā¦.not just to their safety, but to THEM. To their ideas. To their feelings. Being steadfast and sticking to your guns. Children need consistency. They need to know that if you came through once, youāll come through again. As I said earlier in my profile, kids need us. So, whatās the most important thing about being a nanny?? SHOWING UP.
My experience with special needs children...
I cared for a boy for almost three years who was autistic and very low functioning. He had a set routine that was essential for his cognitive development but, also simply for his comfort.
He was also on a special diet, and also had a specific sleep and hygiene routine. I also administered his meds. I got him ready for school, and on and off the bus every day.
We would take neighborhood walks, and sometimes, I'd attempt and succeed in getting him to play in the backyard with his brother on the trampoline, or we'd play hide and seek.
Additionally, Iāve dealt with ADHD extensively several times and I have also worked with the hearing impaired.
He was also on a special diet, and also had a specific sleep and hygiene routine. I also administered his meds. I got him ready for school, and on and off the bus every day.

The most important part about being a nanny...
One of my kids loved food, and would eat anything! But, knowing this...I had to be extra careful with what I gave him, making sure it was broken up into small enough pieces and so on. This meant watching him even more carefully than usual while he ate, because he'd fill his cheeks up like a chipmunk!
One day, I gave him some grapes and knowing he'd shove them in his mouth, I cut them each in half and told him to "chew, chew, chew!"
Acknowledging what I said, he shoves some grapes into his little face, looks up at me....and with juice dribbling down his chin, he shouts out, "chew! chew! chew!"...and splat!!! I get a freshly chewed pile of grape on my foot....
I still smile..... :)
