A little bit about me

Hi, my name is Jess! I was born and raised here in Washington and I love our beautiful PNW. I have almost four years of professional childcare experience now, but I have been the go to babysitter for my friends and family for as long as I can remember.

I've worked in licensed childcare facilities for nearly the past four years so I have all of my certifications that that entails. I maintain up to date safe sleep training and I recently completed my college coursework for stacking certificates in Early Childhood Education. My experience in licensed centers has given me experience and knowledge of child development from birth to six years old.

The twos and threes are my passion despite the bad rep they have and I have partnered with many a family on potty training their tiny humans. I approach childcare as a partnership, confidently managing day-to-day routines while working closely with parents to ensure they stay actively involved in their child’s growth and development.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I started as a part-time caregiver at our local church on Sundays and then added on an informal babysitting/nanny position with one of the families from that job. I started working in licensed childcare during the pandemic and have been there ever since.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love to do what your child wants to do! Everything from arts and crafts to field trips to playing outside rain or shine. I am a firm believer in play-based learning and emergent learning activities, meaning if your child shows an interest and enjoyment in a subject then we will explore that as much as they like until they move on to the next thing. My preschool and toddler classes have raised bugs, explored all types of animals, built elaborate contraptions, etc.
I also approach behavior management from the perspective that engagement and empathy are the best ways to avoid the behavior problems before they start. I've many children come through my classroom that were labeled with so called "problematic" behaviors that turned out to just be kiddos that needed more challenging activities.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My goal is always to provide a safe and nurturing environment where they child and family both feel supported. I have a lot of knowledge on developmentally appropriate behavior but also the understanding that each child develops at their own pace. I want to meet that child where they are while providing opportunities for them to learn and grow. Unmet milestones are an area for growth to me and most kids will catch up eventually, but I prioritize open communication with the family so I can aid them in their goals for the child.

My experience with special needs children...

I am myself diagnosed with ADHD and likely on the autism spectrum and just thoroughly neurodivergent, so I have a lot of empathy for those kiddos that exhibit sensory and attention struggles. I have worked with many kiddos with sensory struggles and struggles with maintaining their attention and finding alternatives in my classroom to accommodate their learning styles. I have some limited experience working with nonverbal children but most of my skills are adapted from working with my kiddos with speech differences. I know and use a decent amount of sign language and I am always looking to learn more as it has been an amazing tool when working with my tiny humans.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite experiences are the little, spontaneous ones. My first ever nanny experience, I had a two year old boy and we decided to play outside since the weather was nice. Following his lead, we decided to fill the kiddie pool with water from the hose and we both got in to splash around. It was such a fun moment that stuck with me over a decade later. The parents were so surprised and delighted by the little adventure and it became a tradition for our sunny days at home together.
