The most important part about being a nanny...
From an educator standpoint, I believe that children deserve to be recognized as individuals with their own autonomy. They deserve to be respected as a fellow human being and treated as such. It is very important to me that children not only have a high quality of care, but that they also feel that they are important to their caretaker and can trust them with anything. When spending so much time with someone outside of the family, it is crucial that they feel safe and loved. You also have to be reliable and understand the psychology behind a child's behavior to be successful. Personally, I try to bring the calmest atmosphere possible to all children in my care. Young children need co-regulation, and it is essential for the adult to have a grasp on their own emotions to help them do so.
My experience with special needs children...
I have quite a bit of theoretical knowledge of special needs education and care due to my college coursework. I have only cared for one preschool aged child on the autism spectrum thus far. However, I grew up around friends with a variety of special needs and would say that I am comfortable in being a special needs child's caretaker. I am very calm in nature and do not mind trial and error or high pressure situations.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I have so many favorite moments with the children I've worked with, but the best has to be with one of my toddlers that I am very close to and have been caring for and teaching since he was three months old. He attempted to hit a younger friend, and following the conscious discipline approach, I had him play in a separate area from his friends to hold the boundary that we do not hit. This little guy is an absolute goofball... I turned around and he's smiling at me and blowing me kisses, presumably to convince me to let him come back and join the activity. I laughed so hard! Another one of my favorites is a potty training two year old telling me that his "poop is too tired" to go on the potty. He was so serious about it, too!
