More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

As a mother of a now-grown daughter, I've had a houseful of kids year in and year out, as well as organizing summer camps, homeschool pods, game nights, and other gatherings and activities. I grew up taking care of my sister and other neighborhood children, and my first job out of college was serving as a nanny for a toddler with Down Syndrome and her infant twin siblings, a boy and a girl. On a little island on the West Coast, I taught young children at an outdoor farm and wilderness school, through rain, snow, and sun. Here in the beautiful mountains of Maryland, I've worked for three years with children with moderate to severe disabilities, while teaching college "on the side."

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love following the cycle of the seasons with children, exploring nature, singing, moving, playing, reading, writing, creating art, using our senses, following interests and developing themes. I believe in play and rest, good work, and healthy connection. I aim to co-create activities with children based on their interests, abilities, and developmental needs, from infancy to young adulthood.

My experience with special needs children...

I've worked extensively with children across the neurodiversity spectrum, including those with autism, ADHD, various learning disabilities, Down Syndrome, and other neurodevelopmental diagnoses and expressions. As a licensed special education teacher with a masters degree in educational studies focusing on special education, I taught for three years in a year-round therapeutic day school for students with autism and emotional disabilities, from elementary to high school, both speaking and non-speaking. As a mother, community member, and mentor/teacher in alternative and home-based educational settings, I have worked with neurotypical and neurodivergent children of all ages, formally and informally, for over twenty years.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I love observing and interacting with children to see what interests them, what lights them up, and what engages their attention from moment to moment and over time. I've watched non-speaking children create extraordinary art that provided insights into their vital imaginative and intellectual abilities. Likewise, I've delighted in the verbal acuity and playfulness of children coming into their own as they realize their ability to read, write, understand mathematical concepts, and finally "get" the "wow" of history, science, and the natural world.
