The most important part about being a nanny...
I had a group of very wild young children and it was my first day with them. They tried all the usual antics to get attention and test my boundaries to the max. I actually felt a little anxious in the moment but then my education reminded me of a few things that I had not had to use in the past so I had never tried it. The children were running and screaming and climbing and out of control and I could not get their attention so I just sat down on the floor and put my head down. They immediately stopped and walked to me and sat down around. They started making sure I was ok and they lowered their voices significantly. I just told them how I felt and that I had all these exciting new things I wanted to teach them and have them help me do. They wanted to be helpers and listen and follow along immediately. We never had that type of incident happen again. From that moment forward I had their attention and courtesy. Empathy; its an important part of the process.
