The most important part about being a nanny is building a trusting, loving relationship with the children and their family. It’s not just about keeping them safe or entertained—it’s about supporting their growth, being a positive role model, and creating a space where they feel heard, cared for, and encouraged to be themselves.

My experience with special needs children...

As a teacher in Colombia I worked with a 5 year old children with special needs, she is nonverbal autistic with speech delays, or developmental delays. Do that my experience included:

Using Visual Aids: Picture cards, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), or visual schedules to help with understanding routines and choices.

Sign Language or Gestures: Basic signs like “more,” “eat,” or “help” really supported communication.

Simple Language & Repetition: Speaking clearly, slowly, and repeating phrases often helps with understanding.

Sensory-Friendly Activities: Playdough, water play, or sensory bins tailored to her preferences or sensitivities.

Patience & Positive Reinforcement: Celebrating small successes and using encouraging words or tokens to reinforce communication.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favorite moments as a nanny was when one of the little ones I cared for started copying everything I did and said. Whether I was humming a tune, tidying up, or saying a silly phrase, they would mimic me exactly—sometimes even with the same tone and facial expressions! It was both adorable and hilarious, and it really showed me how closely kids watch and learn from the people around them. It made our days full of laughter, and it reminded me just how important it is to be a positive role model.
