A little bit about me

Hi everyone, my name is Kamana Gurung and I’m an international student. I’m enrolled in an ECE program at Sault College. To begin with, talking about my background I was a pre-primary level teacher back home and in-home day care provider at my sister’s house. From the birth to the day before I came to Canada I took care of my niece. And here in Canada, I worked in a day care center recently as an intern. My roles were quite similar to the role I had already done for my niece. I prepared meals, served , washed hands and bottles, cleaned and sanitized table, chairs, floor, toys, beds, and cubbies. We use to go outdoors for nature exploring and outdoor activities. Because my personality is bubbly I easily got attached with kids and they got along with me as I planned and engaged them in activities of their interests. With the help of my mentor and staffs it was easy for me to multitask. There were children with special needs and allergies, we used alternative methods to take care of them.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Reading story books, singing rhymes, doing freeze dancing, finger painting, making different shapes and structures with play dough, going outdoors, playing with cars and toys especially building blocks, playing with Lego, watching cartoon and any show they would prefer, and engaging in sensory activities and all.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The thing that matters the most is, never letting kid’s feel left out. Even though they are not interested in any thing try alternative ways to make them feel the sense of belonging. Understand them, be calm and polite. These are the main thing that are important part about being a nanny.

My experience with special needs children...

There were special needs children in my room it was very hard for me and my staffs to make them eat, sleep, and behave with friends. Which is why we used sign languages to describe what they were supposed to do and not to do. Along with these we applied alternative methods to help them sleep and engage in activities. There was one child who always wanted massage from finger under her arms but that child would never sleep still we tried other methods like rocking which worked out. Sleep is very essential for children so that they could get enough rest from the hectic day and process for the rest of the time.
