More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have worked in childcare environments (daycares, infant rooms, preschools and summer camps) in Colorado, Michigan, South Carolina and now, happily, in the Seacoast area. Ranging from a Forest School, a Montessori kindergarten and several families as a nanny, I found the most fitting philosophy for my work with children to be in Waldorf (which is my educational background). I have traveled with children internationally and helped pregnant mothers, watching their toddlers while birth happens and assisting on weekends as a night-nanny. I am ready to return to working at a home, to take a break from the school world for some time.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love having children work with me hands-on, doing their version of whatever task I am doing (including sweeping and cutting vegetables with a butter knife!). I believe everything can be learned, and fun, if given the right environment, supervision and made age-appropriate. I love music, dancing and small catchy songs to help in teaching. I also adore the great outdoors, walking in parks, at the beach, and making forts in backyards!

The most important part about being a nanny...

Seeing the child grow and learn to love LEARNING in time. The first child I babysat for- I was 13 in 8th grade- and my neighbors had just had their second baby girl. She wasn't even crawling yet! She now has had her own baby recently, which dates me. I love seeing the milestones of childhood and throughout life.

My experience with special needs children...

I have worked with many children on the neurodivergent spectrum, including one child who was still seven, almost eight years old, in kindergarten. He had not begun speaking and had a specific syndrome. We got along very well and I babysat for his family many times. He is doing great today, in third grade and thriving! I believe in the first seven years of life (and up to around age nine), many things like "learning delays" catch up by this time- especially reading, writing and math levels- if given the proper patience, tools and belief from those surrounding the child :)

The most important part about being a nanny...

There are so many! But I particularly love those magical moments when a child really *sees* you, they become invested in who you are as an adult, and they want to imitate what you do. I absolutely love the toddler years when this happens the most. This past Spring I had a little girl at the forest school just blurt out, "Ms. Katie you should be a mommy! Then I will babysit on your baby!" The sweetest things they say :-)
