As I have been a para educator, babysitter, live in nanny, as well as a teacher for infancy - preschool. In addition, I have an Associates degree in early child development and a Bachelor’s degree in child development. The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part of nannying is security. Ensuring that the parents and child feel safe in knowing that their child is in good hands. When a child can be handed over without any crying and hesitation it shows that there is trust there between all parties. This is important because you can’t get to all the fun stuff and development if a child doesn’t feel secure in you. It isn’t always easy or sudden but once you gain security between you, a child and their family. It sets the stage for all other bonds to form and to have a successful shift.

My experience with special needs children...

I have worked in a center for 5 years that caters to children who have either been through trauma, the foster system or who have experienced homelessness. In that, I have worked with children with Down syndrome, adhd and autism.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have many years experience with children so there are so many fun and loving memories that I have. One that has happened recently is me working with a child who not yet has words to communicate so I was teaching her to say “all done” in sign language. I communicated with the mom what we had been working on and her mom assumed that the child was only using hand gestures and did not yet understand what I was trying to teach her. Later that week, the mom sent me a video of her asking the 11month old if she was “all done” and as a result, the child acted out the sign for “all done”. This made both me and the mom very excited to see that the child had actually remembered and learned to communicate through sign, that she was all done. This was a very proud moment as I love to see how a child develops over time and it made me happy that I could assist that family with helping their daughter to communicate.
