Like I said in a previous answer, I truly love to make a connection to be their friend and show them I am not just here to "watch" them but build a fun bond so it's a mutual respect. This also plays into showing the parents that I can be trusted.
My experience with special needs children...
I have volunteered with special needs ever since I was 9 years old. Once in High School I became a camp counselor for a special needs camp during the summers and continued during my college summers. I even was able to babysit some of the campers in High School and in college when I was home.
