More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I did 10+ years of contract sitting with Munchkin Minders company - mostly weekends for visiting families (I've been inside most of the local hotels, Biltmore Estate, Grove Park Inn, etc.), and have been easily able to win childrens' trust while also maintaining authority. Kids listen to me. It's really about being in the moment, going with the flow, gentle and peaceful atmosphere to go to sleep in, waking gently with happy "Hellos".
With kids in school, I think it's important that they get time to unwind when they get home from school. A snack and maybe a 30 minute cartoon show before doing homework and other activities. I strive to make everything we do a winning situation for all involved.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Depends on the children... I do love swimming, taking nature walks, riding bikes, learning languages, reading books, creating fun snacks or meals, puzzles, games, singing, dancing... whatever their interests I'm there for them, paying attention, asking questions and having fun.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Listening. It's important to listen to children so they feel heard, compliment them on many things they are doing (or not doing : ) pre-speech it's about "feeling" what they need and giving it to them... whether it be a cuddle and a song, food, diaper change, a nap... goal being that they feel happy, confident, and important.
I had a nanny gig watching two infants from different families. One day, they were both very hungry. I fixed their bottles, but could only hold and feed one child at a time. I propped up the second boys bottle and positioned his hands to hold the bottle up. He instantly "got it" (I could see the excitement in his eyes) & in that moment, he turned into a different & much happier little person. After that experience, he insisted on feeding himself! His parents were amazed at the change. His unhappy and often frustrated personality was gone and in its place was confidence and independence. It was so fun watching him get happier.
It's a rewarding job!

My experience with special needs children...

I worked a job for nine months, caring for adults with mental retardation, autism, and schizophrenia. I could get the whole house inspired to go for a walk at the park. I saw these people as friends and just had a lot of fun with them, giving them a positive experience whatever we were doing.
And I had a nanny position for three years with twins. They were totally opposite in personality and expression and I learned to focus equally so they each felt they were getting equal attention. The children were well-behaved, very active, funny too! and such robust eaters!!! Love to feed kids like that.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was watching 3 little girls at a hotel. They had mermaid tails they wanted to try out - a special gift from grandma! We had so much fun pretending to be mermaids in the hotel pool..
There was a little girl at the pool that day, who very much loved the mermaid tails. I encouraged one of the little girls to let her try it out. She became the authority and taught the little girl how to swim with the mermaid tail on. I was so proud of the way she shared and handled this teaching assignment. Her sisters helped demonstrate too.
For me it's a gift to be around and help inspire kids to be the very best version of themselves - to have confidence in who they are and recognize that they have skills.
Later that evening, we were playing a bingo game and the five year-old was doing math in her head and keeping score! And she was accurate! Her older sisters were encouraging her skill, it was beautiful to watch. Such an achievement for a five-year-old. .
Children always surprise me!
