A little bit about me

Hello! My name is Madie and I’m a sophomore at Baylor University majoring in Health Science Studies on the pre-veterinary medicine track. I absolutely adore children and taking care of them, my biggest goal in life is to have a family of my own! In my spare time I have always gravitated towards art and music, I took art and piano classes for 12 years. I also love animals, fun fact: I have 4 dogs, 4 cats, and 3 jumping spiders!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I interned as a behavior technician for young children (3-5 y/o) with autism and tutored middle schoolers in math. I also volunteered at Talitha Koum, a daycare that focuses on brain development for children aged 8 months-5 years. I also have many young nieces and nephews (all under 3 years old) who I babysit all the time. Back when I lived in California I’d watch after my nephew 2-3 times a week after daycare when his parents were at work.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love finding fun ways to develop hand-eye coordination, typically through fun arts and crafts. I have used dyed macaroni to teach my nephew to string it through thread, done fun finger painting/coloring, using a variety of sensory toys, along with many others. I also love taking them outdoors, preferably to a nearby park to let them have some fun on the playground or with something easy like bubbles in the backyard. But, I am always excited to simply play whatever the kids feel like with their toys at home!

The most important part about being a nanny...

Being a nanny, it’s important to me that I’m not just looking after the child, but also using my time with them effectively. At such a young age it’s so important to continuously work with them to develop their fine and gross motor skills, which shouldn’t stop just because the parents are not present. As I said before, I love finding fun and interactive ways to get a child using their hands or moving around! Even below 1 year old, I think it’s important to stimulate their minds in a fun and practical way, whether it be through tummy time and a book or sitting up and playing with sensory toys.

My experience with special needs children...

As an intern for children with autism, I have many hours of experience in handling kids who may not fully understand how to regulate their emotions or communicate their needs just yet. Many of the kids I worked with were non-verbal, using simple sign language to communicate (more, all-done, etc.). One of the many things I learned was how to handle emotional outbursts and to observe when to give a child some space as to not overstimulate them. I also grew up with 2 autistic cousins, which is where my experience began.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favorite moments from nannying was looking after my nephew who at the time had just taken his first steps. I spent the day with him encouraging him to continue practicing, trying to get him to take one more step than he had before. At the beginning of the day he had reached his record of 8 steps, and by nighttime he was able to make it across the room. It was incredibly heartwarming seeing how hard he was trying and seeing him light up and get excited to try something new. I loved seeing his hard work pay off and being there first hand to witness his progress and I was so proud of him.
