More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
Over 10+ years of working with children in different settings such as daycare (worked within the college daycare, lead teacher in the 1-2 year old room&preschool room at Kindercare in Milwaukee), camps (junior counselor at YMCA camps, Girl Scout camps, head counselor at Camp Ramapo in New York -a camp for children with special needs), classrooms (spending evenings with school age children at Kindercare), babysitting(from the age of 15 and on), being a nanny (most recently, nanny to a 2 year old boy in the South Loop), student teaching (spending prolonged time in different elementary classrooms during college as well as implementing lesson plans and specifically working with children with special needs), volunteering at the YMCA throughout college for the Girl's Night Out program [phone number hidden])
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
-going to the beach
-Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Planetarium, the zoo
-getting outdoors everyday for some type of physical activity where they can learn something new (with the current boy I nanny for, we have enjoyed taking walks where I was able to teach him about the different butterflies and insects, as well as looking for fish near the harbor, identifying different birds or dogs we would see, he is only 2 but he has retained the information so well)
-teaching swimming/going swimming
-playing with chalk and bubbles outside
-always talking about the weather for that day...every child loves going looking for rainbows!
-learning about trains, checking out the trains by his home everyday, and finally riding a train
-learning our ABC's and then applying them to things we see on our walks
-having play dates
-sing alongs (the original Lion King is a favorite)

The most important part about being a nanny...
is being a trusted member of a family that you were welcomed into, in which the child or children look to you as someone they can play with and have fun with- a playmate if you will, but they learn to respect you and are able to see through your actions and behavior that however much fun you may have together as friends, the nanny is the adult, and must be listened to. It's hard to find a balance between being a friend and being their guardian for the day, but when you find it, it makes life so much easier and is a huge relief off of the parents' back knowing their child is having fun but will be safe.
My experience with special needs children...
I have cared for children with a wide range of special needs as well as being a wide range of ages. As head counselor at Camp Ramapo in New York, I lived with three different groups of children throughout the summer, including boys as young as 4 years old to girls who were nearly the same age as me at the time, 20. The camp was designed to bring children with all different types of special needs together to one place, to work together, play together, grow together, and to learn more about each other. These special needs ranged from things such as ADHD that were behavioral, to non verbal autistic children, and even children with special needs such as Prader Willi syndrome.
After taking multiple courses about students with disabilities or special needs in college, I was selected to be the student that would go into classrooms and work with those students in particular, which meant designing lesson plans that took into account the many aspects of special needs.
