To me the most important part is being there for the kids and building a bond with not only them but the parents too! I feel like the better the bond the easier it is to be around them! If they accept you into their home then it makes the job 100 times easier!
My experience with special needs children...
My aunt has a special needs son, he is partially blind and deaf, he speaks sign language and often uses made up signs, sort of like a slang! He is 16 but has the mentality of a 9 year old. He is super sweet and I would never treat him differently then anyone else. I see him around 3-4 times a week.
