More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I worked as an assistant teacher at a Montessori preschool for about two years. In this position, I spent most of my with about 60 children aged 3-6. I also helped out with toddlers at the preschool when needed. I have a large family, and grown up babysitting children from infant age to about 11 years. While working for an adult with special needs, I have cared for him and members of his family from infant age to about 10 years. So I have confidence in caring for multiple children at a time.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

My favorite activities include arts and crafts, science experiments, and music. However, I've always loved following the interests of those I've cared for, and using that as a jumping point to find activities to do together. I've found that to be the most rewarding.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part about being a nanny, or caring for anyone is that you truly have to love your job. You have to be excited to go in, and get to spend time with the individual you are caring for. I think this is why it is so important to find the right fit between a nanny and a family. I have trained many newcomers for families, and I can tell you first hand that if a nanny and a family don't click with eachother it will go one of two ways: the nanny will not fill the position for long, or the nanny will not last long working at 100%. Both of these impact the person being cared for, and in gerenal wastes a lot of time and energy. I feel it is really important for the parents and nanny to also discuss personality types and expectations during the interview process.

My experience with special needs children...

I have a lot of experoence with all levels of autism, from high functioning, to those who are nonverbal and need extra care. I also have plenty of experience with wheelchair users, and confidentiality transfer, bathe, and aid in personal hygiene. One of my favorite memories is helping teach a nonverbal adult to brush his teeth. With a lot of teamwork between his parents, the individual, and myself, we have turned it into a cherished daily ritual! I find that positive reinforcement, routines, compassion, and patience can go a very long way.

The most important part about being a nanny...

There are so many wonderful moments that as cliché as it sounds, it is hard to pick. With every person I've cared for, my favorite part has been getting to know and bond over their sense of humor. One of my favorite stories from when I assisted teachers at a preschool was when a student came up to me after nap time and whispered to me, "Ms. Mariam, my powers are back!". I don't know what powers she was referring to, but I sire was happy for her! Another favorite would be an adult with special needs sassily telling me "goodbye" at the beginning of my shift. By this point we had built a rapport, and I could jokingly pretend to gather my things to leave, and he would grab my arm to hug me, giggling as he told me "Noooo!". It always made me happy knowing he wanted me to stay, and that he was comfortable enough to be silly with me.
