A little bit about me

I'm a former teacher and parent to five adultlets/adults (some still live at home) and I miss working with younger kids. Some of my kids are neurodiverse in various ways.

I was previously a SpEd and GenEd teacher for 10 years. I believe kids of all ages and abilities are most secure when they get the attention they need. As a member of their village, I need to laugh with, listen to, teach, and treat them as beautiful human beings. Then we can all relax and enjoy our time together. That said, it is vital for all the caregivers to be on the same side when it comes to rules and for the parents to lead.

A nanny may be in a child's life for a time, but parents are there for life.

I am an animal lover and have dogs and cats.

I'm happy to prepare and clean bottles, prepare and serve children's food, and tidy up our messes. However, I am typically not able to devote time to other dishes, cleaning, meal prep, or other household tasks.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I worked as a teacher for a number of years with students with a wide number of learning and intellectual disabilities, maybe of whom were neurodiverse in mild/moderate and general education classroom settings.

I have worked for over four years in a non-public school whose students all were diagnosed with mental health or behavioral disabilities that impacted their learning.

I have tutored students who had a variety of educational issues that led to them performing below grade level.

I have taught mild/moderate high school level classes of a variety of subjects including: reading, literature, US history, world history, and senior seminar.

I have been a parent to a child born a 2 lb preemie, with some residual expressive and receptive language delays and sensory processing issues, who is now a healthy 18 year old ready to graduate high school in June.

I have been a nanny/babysitter/taught many other kids of all ages.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Reading, coloring, singing toddler songs (5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, There were Ten in the Bed, 5 Little Ducks went out One Day), "drinking tea", pretending, being silly, following the child's lead, learning games, memory games, puzzles, digging in dirt, sitting and watching

I love having my phone out while I'm caring for a child. It isn't because I'm watching videos for me, but playing songs for the kids. Music has been one of the favorite learning tools of some of my lessons. My kids can still name the fifty states because of a song. I know the order of the planets because of a rhyme from a song.

The rest is just doing what makes the kids happy. I follow their lead. I'm perfectly happy snuggling up on a couch and reading to kids for hours - and that's what some kids want. I've been invited to tea parties with crowns and hopefully pretend tea. I've also crashed trains on tracks and flipped cars.

However, if it involves more exercise, I may include my mobility scooter.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Helping a family raise their child in a kind and loving environment that reaches them at their level. I can help the child become the best person they can be by teaching them how to learn, how to be respectful and compassionate, and how to care for others and the world around them.

My experience with special needs children...

I have cared for a number of special needs children, both my own and others. While I haven't cared for kids with special medical needs, I am open to being trained.

I have worked with kids who have ASD, ADHD, ODD, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, kids who were born addicted to various chemicals, and kids with a variety of mental health disorders, including those cause by abuse. I have worked with kids who have learning disorders of wide varieties.

I feel that I have been trained in and know a wide range of teaching techniques that work with all ages, calming techniques, and ways to keep myself and the child safe.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was nannying for an 18 month old named Brenna where I had been when she was very small and Brenna didn't remember me. I had been trying to get her to come lay down and nap and Brenna just wouldn't, despite obviously wanting the bottle I had ready for her. I asked her to come sit on the couch with me. Brenna shook her head no, then brought her baby doll to me. I picked the doll up and gave it Brenna's bottle. Brenna got a cross look on her face, then she picked up the fake doll bottle and put it in her own mouth. Then she laughed, brought the doll bottle over, and exchanged it for hers, straight out of my hand! I couldn't believe it. I laughed too. Then Brenna took her bottle behind the curtains where she had been hanging out, drank her bottle, and fell asleep on the floor. I took a picture and sent it took her parents. They agreed. We let the sneaky little girl stay there for her nap.
