More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I have worked as a camp counselor at St. Catherine's School's summer program called Brilliant Summer. I spent 3 summers there, and it taught me a lot about just how many approaches there are that are unique to working with a specific child. Everyone is different, and a lot of kiddos need different ways of being cared for.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love playing outside- activities such as riding bikes, playing sports, and going to the park. Basically, I enjoy almost all outdoor activities with the kiddos!
However, I definitely know how to bring the fun indoors! I am great at indoor games- including, but not limited to, some of the great indoor classics, such as hide & seek, board games, and almost anything else that is fun, but not too disruptive or messy, etc.. I love coloring! I even come with my own colored pencils and markers😉). I love playing ""make believe", because, even though I am still the adult in charge, it brings out my inner kid, and that is always fun!

The most important part about being a nanny...
To me, the most important part of being a nanny is that, no matter what, everything that you do is done in the child's best interest. The children always come first, no matter what. If that means having to be the bad guy and say no to playdates because they were grounded by their parents, then I will back the parents up. No matter how much I, or the kids, might want to do something, I will never disregard the parents' rules, and I will always respect your parental choices, because you are doing what you feel is best for your child, and that is the most important thing to me.
My experience with special needs children...
I have a cousin who is only a few months older than I am, and he was diagnosed with Asperger's when we were both about 2 years old or so. I saw firsthand the inordinate amount of time, patience, and skills that helped him. When he was diagnosed, his mom quit her job, so that she could work with him and their OT full-time, and I know that that made the greatest difference.
I have lots of knowledge of all types of special needs, but I have only had a few experiences in actually caring for special needs children.
I volunteered at Northstar Academy for 3 years in high school, and it gave me a much greater understanding of the spectrum.
At Brilliant Summer Camp, I worked one-on-one with a young boy who was autistic. I can't recall where exactly on the spectrum he was, but he was somewhat verbal. I worked so well with him!
I babysat for a family with an autistic, nonverbal 3 year old girl, and, although it was the most challenging of all my experiences, it taught me the most.

The most important part about being a nanny...
I think that my favorite nanny moment was when I nannied for the family with their 2 girls. This is going to sound like such a cliché, but it was when they both learned how to ride their bikes without training wheels. I helped the older girl, who was 7, with her fear of riding, because she had fallen before when she was first learning with her parents, and she was so scared to fall again. But, I didn't let her quit! I didn't push her too far, but I taught her that it's okay to fall- what's important is that you get back up and keep trying... and she did!!
Then, months later, the younger daughter, who was 5, wanted to be like her big sister, and so she learned to ride without training wheels, too!
Knowing that I helped them achieve those goals makes me smile every single time that I remember those moments (including right now, as I type this)!!!
