More About Me
My experience with special needs children...
I have experience working with children k-6 in special education in the public school system mostly supporting children with Down syndrome and autism. I have experience with children who have behavioral issues such as aggression, pica, elopement, and destruction. I also spent a year and a half nannying a 7 year old with autism who communicated mostly through his AAC device and sign language.
My approach to these behaviors is through compassion and consistency. I am aware life can bring huge emotions and for children who still do not have the tools to communicate them can be quite frustrating so they need to express themselves somehow. Having this understanding reflects the way I teach and guide children by consistently reinforcing appropriate behaviors, setting small achievable goals that encourage the process and rewarding positive behaviors.
