A little bit about me

My name is Jazmin. I am a 4th year university student at UC Merced. I am minoring in Natural Sciences of Education and majoring in English. In college I gained a lot of experience working with kids. As a volunteer with Cal Teach as well as my side job of tutoring, I gained a lot of insight into what it means to teach. In addition, I volunteered with the SFPD Cadet program where I helped organize and host events around the city, funraise, meet lawyers, and participate in Thursday meetings once a month where we learned about police training. I worked with Human Resources where I learned so much about organization, communication, and patience. I also have learned to use Microsoft Excel, which allows me to help organize data in an organized fashion. On that note I am aware this opportunity isn’t directly associated with teaching, but it will help me gain experience.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy arts and crafts along with going outdoors to play in the park. I will say I am biased towards doing homework with children (if they have any). As as someone going into teaching I love to help kids learn something new everyday. Even during play it is fun to include learning by adding math or new words to the games. As someone who was a soccer coach for toddlers and Lifeguard I have a lot of experience mixing learning and play.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part about being a nanny is communication. Kids are a lot smarter than we think. As someone taking teaching classes such as PSY 130 (childhood development) it is proven kids learn. a lot faster than we think. Therefore, I like to be extremely communicative and ensure they are heard. If a kids is acting out I do not yell. I ask them what they feel and I. I simple sit and listen to offer them a space to communicate their feelings. It helps a lot since they calm after talking, drawing out their feelings, playing, and or eating.

My experience with special needs children...

I do not currently have any, but am willing to learn to help!

The most important part about being a nanny...

I love making connections with not only the kids but with the family. My favorite part of being nanny is being able to connect with the parents and talk to them about how their kid spent the day and also hear about their day. My favorite moment when this happen was when the kids was finally able to read a book on their own. He had been struggling sounding out the letter, but working with him I was able to help him sound the letter out. When their mom came home she was so happy, because I recorded it for her. That's a memory that she and I will forever cherish.
