More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
Before becoming a nanny, I worked in preschools and after-school daycare programs for 5 years. I worked with a range of ages during this time, from 2-months-old to 12-years-old.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I enjoy reading books with the children, especially going on library trips. I also enjoy taking my nanny kiddos on walks, to the playground, to the splash pad, to kick a ball around, to educational activities such as the Children’s Museum or the zoo. I’m a big fan of arts and crafts, teaching practical life skills, playing with their toys, among many other things.
My experience with special needs children...
I was lucky enough to be entrusted with the care of one of my former nanny kids, who was a micropreemie. Through working with her, I gained experience in working with a child who has some physical challenges. I was also a respite care provider for a little girl with intellectual challenges. In addition, was part of a program called Best Buddies in high school where “typical” students are paired with students who have intellectual and/or physical challenges to form a friendship. I got to meet so many wonderful people that way! One of my good friends, who I’ve known for 26 years has intellectual challenges, and I have often helped her.
The most important part about being a nanny...
This happened at the beginning of my nanny career, 11 years ago. It was my first day with a new family, and the little boy, who I’ll call J, had just turned 4-years-old a few days prior, so there was birthday cake in the kitchen. His parents had specially said not to let him have any cake that day. He came up to me, and this is how the conversation went:
J: “Miss Rachael, don’t look at me, okay?”
Me: “Why, what’re you going to do?”
J, eyeing the birthday cake: “Just don’t look at me, okay?”
Me “You’re gonna get some of that cake, aren’t you?”
J: “Ugh, I was just gonna get a little bit on my finger!”
It still makes me laugh when I think about it!
