A little bit about me

Hi! I am a 20-year-old college student at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. I am from Washington State, where I worked with children for the last three years before transferring schools this previous fall. I have cared for children from 6 months to thirteen years old. I have worked as a preschool/ daycare teacher and had all the responsibilities this position included from changing diapers, feeding infants, creating educational projects for students, making snacks..etc. Prior to transferring to UHM, I was a full-time nanny to two boys, eight and three years old. I spent most days with the three-year-old taking him to various places for educational purposes, cooking a variety of meals for him, as well helping him to become potty trained. The three-year-old had a form of autism and I am more than comfortable working with special education children. With the eight-year-old, I assisted with homework, made meals, and was responsible for school drop-off and pick-up at his school.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have worked as a preschool/ daycare teacher where I had all the responsibilities this position included. This ranged from diaper changes, creating educational projects, meal prepping..etc. I also worked at the YMCA during the peak of covid and my position was similar to that of a teacher. I was placed in a classroom with 15 students at a time and tasked with helping them get on zoom meetings, and during breaks or after classes were over creating educational projects. The educational projects ranged from art, math, and reading. I would come to work with math games. matching games, number and letter games, and made various art projects that challenged and advanced a multitude of intelligence.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy creating educational projects that challenge a child and help them to develop the seven different types of intelligence. I enjoy playing games with chidlren that make me feel like a kid again. I enjoy baking and cooking with children. I love doing silly and fun art projects with children as well as creating projects that can be hung up for mom. Almost any activity with children is enjoyable for me being around children brings out the best qualities in myself and I love having new experiences and trying new activities.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I do not believe there is one individual aspect that is most important to being a nanny. Every part of a nanny position is equally important, but I would say the most important is to be reliable and a trustworthy person in the lives of the child/children and the parents. Without this key aspect, there is no foundation to have an enjoyable experience with the family. There are many other key factors that include proper communication with the child and the family. When I nannied I regularly texted the parents updates with pictures of what we were doing, eating..etc. Creativity is another big one whether it is about creating engaging activities or how to creatively help a child adjust their mood.

My experience with special needs children...

In 2020 I worked at the YMCA, during this time it was the peak of the covid-19 pandemic and was placed as a teacher assistant in the special education classroom our program offered. I have worked with numerous children with ADHD, autism, and other learning disabilities, and would say working with special needs children is my strong suit. I am a very patient person and struggled in school as a child and have reflected on the caretaker I needed at a younger age and have taken on characteristics of that ideal person. I understand how to engage children when they are not willing to try and understand ways to communicate with children when others may struggle in this area due to my personal experiences growing up.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite moment while being a nanny was a few months before I moved to Hawai'i. I had spent the whole day with the eight-year-old I watched at the fair and we had so much fun together on our drive home he looks at me and tells me how much he was going to miss me when I moved for school. I struggled to get the words out to reciprocate how much I would miss him and his brother without crying. This was likely one of my favorite memories as a nanny because I realized that once I left to pursue my education in Hawai'i I realized my view of the children I watched as my own little family was a mutual feeling. There was never a dull moment with the three-year-old and I could talk about my favorite memories with him for hours. Hearing his laugh when I would read a Dr. Seuss book, holding his hand while on a walk, saying hi to the wooden bear on the neighbor's porch every walk, and hearing him laugh at funny voices I would make are moments I will always cherish.
