Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I have babysat for 2 families both longer than 6 months. The age range was roughly around 5-9 years old. I currently work in an afterschool program with specifically TK-K students so around the ages of 3-6. Along working with TK-K students, I also support grades 1-6 when needed.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Activities I enjoy doing with children would be crafts, pretend play, and academic activities. I enjoy doing crafts with children because it allows them to use their fine motor skills which could be crucial depending on age. It also allows them to use their imagination and creativity which is why I also enjoy doing pretend play. During pretend play children get to be creative and make their own decisions. Academic activities don’t always have to be boring and making them fun can sometimes help children not feel intimidated by certain learning material. Hands on activities are my favorite to do and are enjoyed majority of the time by children of all ages. It is important that every activity is tweaked by age range!
The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important part about being a nanny is making and enforcing safe spaces with the children. Having somewhere the children can feel comfortable can foster the bond between the child and myself. Being kind but firm, allowing creativity, and overall creating a relationship is very important to me in having a successful nanny environment.
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked with a couple high functioning special needs children. One of the children I have worked with was high functioning but rarely spoke. I would use action cards, legos, paper activities in order to communicate with them. I would also focus on their needs and adjust activities to their likes/dislikes. The other child I worked with was also high functioning but would get mildly aggressive. In that case I would take time out of my day to get to know them more, recognize their triggers, and learn different coping mechanisms. Because of my work with high functioning special needs children, I am only willing to work with high functioning children as of right now until I can get more experience with children who may need more support to be able to feel more confident providing that care.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite nanny moment is seeing the impact I make on the children. On days I am not able to make it or I am not needed, the next time I see the child they share how much they missed me. Seeing how crucial it is to show up for children once you are implemented into their routine is important to me in creating and strengthening bonds.
