When I was an educator, I taught students the states and their capitals and how to spell them. During a spelling review, I asked my kids to write the Kentucky capital on their papers, which, of course, is "Frankfort."
One of my homeroom students, Nicole, spelled it out as "Frankenstone," which made me absolutely hysterical. Because of that, I decided Frankenstone would be her nickname, and shortly thereafter, nearly all of my students that year asked me to give them all nicknames.
I told them that the nicknames had to come naturally to me, and eventually they did; each was based on something funny or ridiculous the child either said or did. Each child embraced their own and others' nicknames; some received multiple and would try to compete with their peers over how many they had and how many more they'd accumulate.
It was very fun but also sentimental. I'll always remember their names.
